Stephen Dewhurst, PhD

Research, School of Medicine & Dentistry

Stephen Dewhurst is Vice President for Research at the University of Rochester (UR), Vice Dean for Research at the UR’s School of Medicine & Dentistry (SMD), and a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the UR School of Medicine & Dentistry. Steve has over 30 years of experience in virology research, with current interests that include: (1) Understanding the interaction of

HIV with glial cells; (2) Developing an improved live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV); (3) Elucidating the host cell response to infection by viral pathogens (with emphasis on SARS-CoV-2). He is the Co-Director of the UR’s NIH-funded Clinical Trials Unit (which conducts

clinical trials of novel vaccines and therapeutics for HIV/AIDS, and currently also for COVID-19).  His recent past roles include: NIH study section member and chair; director of the UR’s Cell Therapy Manufacturing Facility; President of a UR vaccine startup company (Codevax).
